It is a tremendous honor to be asked to serve as a Godparent or Sponsor. When a family chooses you for this important role, they are expressing their trust that you will be a positive Catholic role model and a faithful companion in the spiritual life of their child or candidate.
Being a Godparent or Sponsor is more than fulfilling a requirement. It is a commitment to witness to the Catholic faith, support another person in their journey with Christ, and help them grow in their relationship with the Church. It is a beautiful responsibility—and one that invites us to reflect on our own faith and our connection to the Catholic community.
Because of the importance of this role, the Church has established specific requirements for those who serve as godparents or sponsors. According to Canon Law, a sponsor must be fully initiated into the Catholic Church, having received Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation, and must be registered and an active, practicing Catholic who seeks to live out the faith. (If you are unsure whether you are registered or whether your registration is current, we are happy to help; contact our parish office at 973-538-1358, ext. 100).
Our Pastor, Fr. Vidal, is responsible for verifying that those requesting a Sponsor or Godparent certificate currently meet these requirements. Registering with the parish alone will not meet the requirements; the parish must be able to verify that active participation and engagement in the parish have been part of the requester's spiritual journey. For those who received Confirmation here at our parish, we can verify the sacrament through our records. For others, we may ask for documentation from the parish where they received the sacrament.
Being an active parishioner is about being present regularly, participating, growing in faith, and sharing your gifts of time, talent, and treasure with the parish community.
Regular participation at Mass is at the heart of our life as Catholics, but engagement in parish life can take many forms. You may participate by:
Serving in a parish ministry
Attending parish events and opportunities for fellowship
Participating in adult faith formation, retreats, or small groups
Volunteering or serving those in need
Engaging with parish communications and staying connected to the life of the parish
Sharing your time and talents
Supporting the parish through Offertory Giving
These are all ways we Give, Pray, and Serve—expressions of our commitment to Christ and to the community we call our parish home.
None of us lives our faith perfectly. Life gets busy, circumstances change, and there may be seasons when we are less engaged in parish life than we would like. If that is the case, we hope this process will not feel like a barrier, but rather an invitation to reconnect, renew, and deepen your relationship with Christ and His Church.
There are many ways to become more engaged, and there is always a place for you in the life of our parish. Come to Mass. Pray with us. Join a ministry. Attend an event. Find a community. Serve those in need. Share your gifts. Give as you are able. Stay connected!
We are grateful that you are part of our parish family, and we pray that your opportunity to serve as a Godparent or Sponsor will be more than simply fulfilling a requirement. May it renew your own faith, deepen your relationship with Jesus, and inspire you to be the faithful witness and companion that another person needs on their journey.
May God bless you as you prayerfully embrace this beautiful responsibility.
